4. I Know It Hurts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B32wxFP-rAQ The initially darker lyrical themes and song titles from AB III paint a fantastic picture of desolation (Slip to the Void, All Hope Is Gone, Isolation etc.), but as we near a point in the album's story of self-motivation and faith-finding, I Know It Hurts is part of the one-two 'pick yourself back up and keep going'-combo that includes Make It Right, standing out with some uplifting and positive messaging that exemplifies what the band do better than everyone else. "We all fall some times, you're not the first, but I know it hurts, yeah I know it hurts" really comes into its own the more you take it as part of the whole album - not to mention being one of the catchiest and infectiously bouncy deliveries on all of AB III. Why you need it: It contains what Mark Tremonti still notes as his most complex guitar solo; a crazy slide-sweep picking pattern that incorporates an already mind-boggling legato run (three notes per string) stretched over the entirety of the guitar neck. It's something he managed to pull off for the recording of the track and the subsequent tour, but has since mentioned multiple times it's incredibly hard to replicate - a high bar for how far he's come learning every aspect of the instrument, inside and out.
