Alter Bridge: 10 Tracks You Need To Call Yourself A Fan

3. Open Your Eyes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eYHvrgPqQ0 Known mostly to any guitarists trying to play along, Alter Bridge's repeated use of multiple guitar tunings across their albums make them very unique in the best of ways. Whereas guys like Avenged Sevenfold, Alice in Chains or Slash will favour Drop D tuning or another throughout their career, AB (and Mark Tremonti in particular) are lovers of experimenting with as many different sounds as possible. That's resulted in more recent releases like Ghosts of Days Gone By or Words Darker Than Their Wings being head-frazzling combinations of some very off-kilter setups, but for the first album, Open Your Eyes was put out in the angelic-sounding Open D5 tuning; one where multiple strings are tuned higher than their standard register, producing a very immediately noticeable and standout sound. Why you need it: It was the band's first single, features one of the best sections purpose-built to rally crowds with some huge chant-a-long sections in the live environment, and Tremonti pulls off what's still one of his most enjoyable solos both to hear and play along to - providing you don't snap a string trying to replicate the tuning in the first place.
