New Alter Bridge Album: 8 Incredible Things To Look Forward To
5. Myles Kennedy's New Lyrical Approach
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM1GlPOvQ6U There's only so many times you can return to the personal well of experience and pull something original out before you're treading on old ground. It's the reason Alice in Chains' Jerry Cantrell once said he was sick of recording sad songs, why Rage Against the Machine simply point to their older albums as being just as relevant today as ever - and why when recording with Slash, Myles mentioned he's started writing songs about completely different subject matters than his own personal history. 30 Years to Life was inspired by a real life prison case, Beneath the Savage Sun addressed the brutality of elephant hunting, The Unholy touched on the horror of religious abuse in the Catholic Church (alongside Slash mentioning it was something he wanted to address after working on his own films) and even Shadow Life was a parable to Mad Men's Don Draper, his 'shadow life' of lies and deceit providing some great inspiration. Some of Alter Bridge's greatest songs were previously inspired by - and paid tribute to - personal tragedies (Blackbird was written for Myles' friend Mark Morse, and the entirety of AB III is a conceptual interpretation of Myles' own dissolution with aspects of his life at the time). However, now that Kennedy has been on tour for years with Slash and has completely revolutionised how he approaches writing songs, it'll be very interesting to see he then deems appropriate to give the Alter Bridge treatment.
