Bjork's most recent album is another emotionally demanding work that details her thought processes in the midst of and after her breakup with artist Matthew Barney.

Self-defeating thoughts beat her down as she makes every attempt to surmount the dissolution of her marriage. With the healing process comes a stream of consciousness involving her own anxieties within the relationship and contradictory thoughts regarding its demise.

There is a musical return to the grandiosity of Homogenic, though this time involving a larger focus on strings over electronics. The emotional nudity of the album's instrumentation is its strong suit.

In the album's centerpiece "Black Lake," Bjork gradually gains the courage to spew vitriol towards Barney in one of the most cathartic tracks in her career. It takes plenty of time to build to this narrative peak - something foreign to Bjork's discography. Vulnicura sees her embracing the new idea of a slow build and it makes for her best album in over a decade.
