Doctor Who: 'An Unearthly Sound' - 11 Best Music Compositions

2. Keff & Who & Rock & Roll

Whether you love or loathe the Seventh Doctor's era (and it is fairly polarising), you have to applaud the attempt to introduce a bit of rock & roll to the Doctor's travels. Setting ' Delta & The Bannermen' on Earth in 1959 gives licence to air a few old-time hits, with Keff McCulloch, resident composer, given licence to step in front of the camera as a member of the Lorells, the group tasked with performing the likes of 'Rock Around The Clock', 'Mr Sandman', and 'That'll Be The Day' for guests of the Shangri- La holiday camp. Perhaps in keeping with the times, the Doctor gets his hand on a guitar towards the end of proceedings, though any thoughts of the pullover-clad clown rocking out are put to bed when he simply hugs the trusty ax, which in a curious paradox is a model not available in the late Fifties, the Squier model of Fender's iconic Stratocaster range. The Strat, though, has been a design classic since 1954, which begs the question of why we'd never seen any of the preceding incarnations of the Time Lord attempt to form a band and make it big. The inevitable musical differences between selves would've made it worth it in themselves, you can't help but feel!
