Every Arctic Monkeys Single Ranked Worst To Best
12. The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala
The audaciously brilliant centrepiece of Suck It And See, The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala is one of the last great Arctic Monkeys songs that sounds like the past. Whether you enjoyed the direction that the band would take or not, it’s hard to deny the warmth that comes from this track.
The bass line here is strolling as it compliments the jangling, ringing guitars while Turner lyrically waltzes all over the song. Described by The Guardian as “an impressionistic canvas more reminiscent of Monet than Morrissey,” the song paints with fantasy and conjures up a world seen right through the eyes of the magical Alex Turner.
The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala features some of the most quotable Turner lines whether that’s “Makes me wanna blow the candles out just to see if you glow in the dark" or “She's got a telescopic hallelujah hanging up on her wall”. Influence from The Smiths lives all over this song, none more in the Johnny Marr-esque wistful guitar lines. The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala is epic and one of the most special songs in the band’s back catalogue.
