23. My Propeller

It may be hard to fathom all of these years later but this track from the band’s third album, Humbug, showed a very unconventional side to Alex Turner. Doused in sexual innuendos and double entendres, My Propellor uses wordplay to conjure up mysticism. Turner swears My Propellor is not about sex, but lyrics like “Coax me out my low, And have a spin of my propeller” make that hard to believe at times.

Alternatively, the lyrics can be read as a story about craving attention from a woman and simply not getting what you need so you feel low. When she arrives, the propellor begins to spin and it's like a new lease of life launched into your body.

My Propellor’s music video plays with silhouettes and mimics the magical mood that the band create in the song. The real meaning behind this idea of a Propellor is secondary to its vibes, and as an opener to Humbug, this song works excellently.
