8. International Smile
Since the release of the album, many comparisons have been drawn between International Smile and the comedy-drama film Almost Famous. Katy even mentions the name of the film's protagonist, Penny Lane and references various other parts of the film including a famous party scene from the film. In spite of this, Katy has said that the song was actually inspired by her DJ friend, Mia Moretti. Rating: 3/5 9. Ghost
Ghost is certainly one of my personal favourites on the album and it definitely supports Katy's claims that the album would be darker than her previous ones. The singer stated that if her fans want to know what really happened between her and Russell Brand that this song explains it. The track is one of the most revealing of the album, focusing on the end of their relationship and Katy's realisation that it was really over, and on top of this it is nice to see a side to Katy which isn't being caricatured to present only the flawless image we so often see of her. Rating: 5/5 10. Love Me
Love Me is another track which gives fans an insight into Katy's relationship with both Russell Brand and John Mayer. The lyrics: I'll be the one defining who I'm gonna be/No concealing feelings, or changing seasonly/ I'm gonna love myself, the way I want you to love me/ suggest how badly Katy's confidence was knocked by the end of her marriage and how necessary it was to build it back up in order to have the kind of relationship she now has with John. The track is inspiring and not dissimilar to Pearl from Teenage Dream in which Katy sings about the inner struggle to be oneself. Rating: 4/5 11. This Moment
The motto of this track is to live life for today and really indulge in the moments that you have right now, not to get stuck in the past. It's an uplifting and typically Katy song which includes aspects of 80s music, especially so-called anthems of the era. The track is fun but it lacks the depth that many of the other songs have, however to me this isn't a downside to the song as the album is well broken up between a mixture of happy and less upbeat songs.
