The ex Vampire Weekend band member Batmanglij spoke publicly about being gay in a Rolling Stone article published in a 2010, though it was something his friends and family had already known about.

Sharing his coming out story on Instagram in 2015, Batmanglij said that reading a "super candid" article by and meeting meeting Ed Droste (who is also openly gay) of Grizzly Bear help him gather the courage to come out to the press which he wrote was "something I had always intended to do".

The song "Diplomats Son" was written with the intention of being about a gay relationship. So too was the song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" for his side project Discovery, which he said he was "disappointed it didn't become a gay anthem, but, you know, it's not too late".

Batmanglij ends his Instagram post saying "it felt so important to have 'reasons' to come out" and how he hopes to live in a future where people don't need a reason to come out. Finishing off his story he tells his fans "In the last six years I've felt this change in the world around me and I hope to feel more of it." Something we can all agree on.
