Metal Allegiance Album: 10 Tracks Reviewed & Ranked

1. Dying Song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgFGODoXXbY Vocals: Philip H. Anselmo Lead & Rhythm Guitars: Alex Skolnick Bass: Mark Menghi Drums: Mike Portnoy Phil Anselmo just has one of 'those' voices that'll never get old. It's instantly recognisable these days, and although Anselmo himself has recently ventured into extremely heavy territory with Phil Anselmo & The Illegals, Dying Song sees him return to a more mid-tempo, Pantera/Down-like sound. It's the sheer power of his vocals that'll draw you in though, Phil's always possessed a way to sell any lyric with so much conviction and passion, and it's a level of intensity that transfers across perfectly into the song's mid-point breakdown, connoting Pepper Keenan's work on Down classic, NOLA. If there's one thing you'll notice across this LP, it's how each band member knows exactly how to showcase the other, and following a tempo-switch into faster territory, Skolnick opens up the chop shop with purpose, trading licks as Portnoy fires off all sorts of intricate drum patterns left, right and centre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s74NFi9xh8Y You can immediately tell why the band's management chose to showcase this as a single, and from the opening picking pattern to the all guns blazing finale, it's an early album highlight that makes full use of these impeccable performers. What have you made of the singles so far, and what are your favourite songs on the album? Let us know in the comments!
