Metallica: 10 Awesome Songs NO ONE Talks About
1. Disposable Heroes - Master Of Puppets
Metallica have had more than their fair share of singalongs in their catalog. However, with the exception of Master of Puppets, most of the shout along choruses in their repertoire tend to come from their more hard rocking tunes like Enter Sandman and Wherever I May Roam. If there were any justice in the world though, Disposable Heroes would have been their unofficial theme song since the '80s.
Going back to the familiar theme of war, this 8 minute epic shows Metallica in peak thrash form, with Hetfield making the most out of just one note to start things off. From a lyrical perspective, this is foreshadowing future epics like One, as Hetfield plays the role of a confused soldier who slowly loses his sanity the more he goes out onto the battlefield. The instrumentation on here is absolutely perfect for the subject matter too, as the ultra-fast tremolo riff simulates the machine gun fire going on around our protagonist as he tries his best to stay alive.
But, really, the main chorus shout of "BACK TO THE FRONT" is one of the most epic moments in Metallica's history, as Hetfield acts as the disgruntled general who will stop at nothing to claim victory among the bloodshed. Though the actual end result might be a bit grim for some, this is probably the one track on Master of Puppets that deserves to be put alongside its brethren like Creeping Death and Battery.
