Saliva: 50 Best Songs From Their Career (So Far)

22. "Two Steps Back" - Survival Of The Sickest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFAVVAhMTdw While putting many themes on display, Saliva has always strayed little from their nu-metal/hard rock roots. Their advantage lies solely in this regard, as they have perfected their craft to balance out many different genres within the medium. But there was an instance on Survival Of The Sickest that saw them blend something completely new to the mix. "Two Steps Back" was an express classic in my opinion, largely because of its quiet emphasis on the country genre. While some may hold this in lieu of something different, I can sense some bit of country in this song. I've always imagined a live performance of "Two Steps Back" where the crowd moves along with the chorus in a wide open arena, almost like a dance-off type of environment. There's regularly been that sound within the song, and the nice balance of hard rock instrument play and country-inspired lyrics helps identify Saliva as a band that tries to blend many different variables all at once.

21. "Raise Up" - Back Into Your System

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yq4XWJrd3A Heading back in to Back Into Your System comes another inspired track that was destined from the very start to lend inspiration into the fans. "Raise Up", one of Saliva's many vouches into spreading messages to the fans, is all about the need to press on and continue life, with or without the unnecessary things. I've always been an admirer of "Raise Up"; the message of putting things into perspective and taking chances in life interconnected with my life back in the early days, and it's songs like these that are remembered not for their overbearing sense of sound and instruments, but for helping set the stage for all the hardships in one's life.

20. "Nothing" - Under Your Skin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QprpKiDrTH8 Coming in at #20 is another tune from Under Your Skin, and the second-to-last song from Saliva's seventh studio album to appear on this list. The first single off the album, "Nothing", is perhaps one of Saliva's strongest attempts at reaching out to those who are in love are who were in love at one point. While it isn't surprising to hear something of this caliber coming from Saliva, it doesn't hurt to produce songs of or in the same ballpark of the continued theme. "Nothing" is one of those songs that was written out of depression. While I tend to not know too much of Scott's background, I can imagine him writing this song based off an experience in his life that forced to to dig up old memories and relay it back to the fans. That lone possible connection is one of several strands that makes this song awesome; others include its simple and balanced use of talent and relation to the album's title, which makes it one of the few songs on the album to actually do so.
