Despite being unsigned at 20, and barely known outside the indie Hip Hop scene, Chance managed to forcibly insert himself into the public music forum with his acclaimed mixtape, 'Acid Rap'. Released freely through the internet, 'Acid Rap' reached 'Platinum' status on the mixtape website, DatPiff, which signifies over 250,000 downloads, and was also nominated for 'Best Mixtape' at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. It has since appeared on several publication's lists for top albums of the year, ranking number 26 on Rolling Stone's and number 2 on Spin's. While an unknown name just a year ago, Chance the Rapper was just as talked about as some of the biggest artists in the industry, proving himself to be rookie of the year. His success also reminded us of the power of the internet, and the ways it can be implemented to subvert the usual obstacles the music industry often has in place for any newcoming musician.
