ADX Florence was opened in 1994 designed to answer that question. In the federal Government's premier super-max prison inmates are kept in their cells for 23 hours a day every day. They have zero contact with other prisoners and extremely limited contact, if any, with guards meaning they will spend the rest of their natural lives completely isolated. Their cells have a shower that runs on a timer to prevent flooding, their fixtures such as a stool and a bed are made from poured concrete, they have a black and white television that shows educational or religious programming and no natural light ever reaches their cells.
