10 Creepy And Unique Mermaid Designs In Movies And TV

10. V Mermaid - The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse Mermaid
A24

We absolutely hit the ground running with this rather peculiar fishy-feature. No matter if you have seen this masterpiece of a vintage horror drama about loneliness and madness of two men on a remote island, you might have heard of the very — well — unique body part of this water lady.

Two lighthouse keepers on a seemingly forgotten and mysterious New England island try to maintain their sanity. Things swiftly drift from awkward to completely mad and moody, distinctly portrayed by the painful absence of all kinds female. One day after he has spent a significant time on the island with only his fellow keeper as company, Robert Pattinson’s character Thomas Howard finds a mermaid amongst the flotsam.

At first she looks mostly like an elegant woman with filigree features and a touch of ballerina about her. But while we pan down and across her pale body, we discover more than just large, pulsating gills on her rib cage. This mermaid also is the proud owner of a large pair of lady parts. Yep, that’s what’s happens. When director Robert Eggers was asked about this rather peculiar mermaid vagina, he explained that the major source of inspiration came indeed from female shark genitals.

“We were looking at oysters and shellfish that sort of like looked labial. But the shark vagina had some things about it that look slightly human.” Ah, welll, considering the circumstances the two Thomas’ are in, one played by Pattinson, the other, Thomas Wake, portrayed by the ever mesmerising Willem Dafoe, the overemphasising of these delicate female parts is obviously rather symbolical. Being absolutely all practical, puppeteers moved this workable prosthetic vagina. In a staggering moment her dolphin-like shrieks make Thomas leg it as if chased by a sea devil.

A rather repulsive sound which is in strange contrast with her overly eroticised attributes. We don’t want to get too superficial or intimate, but this odd mermaid-portrayal and what it stands for makes her a worthy pick for this list.
