Prophecies are some of the worst clichés in fantasy books, but at least the prophecy in The Order of the Phoenix had an origin. In The Cursed Child, however, the prophecy about Voldemort’s return comes from nowhere.

In the closing stages of the third act, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and Draco all investigate Delphi’s room in the hope of discovering the truth about this mysterious witch.

They quickly discover a written prophecy concerning Voldemort’s return, and immediately after, the third act ends with no explanation about the origins of such a prophecy.

The prophecy concerning Harry in The Order of the Phoenix was much more detailed. Rowling made it clear who delivered it, who it was witnessed by, and where it was stored.

The prophecy in The Cursed Child, therefore, is a letdown. It would have been much wiser to have removed this part of the story altogether.
