5. Travelling Light
Artist: Inges Idee (group)
Location: Calgary, Canada Colloquially known as the 'Giant Blue Ring', this piece of public art has caused a lot of debate since its construction last year. Primarily, from Calgarians wondering why this ridiculous looking structure cost a grand total of $470,000. Standing at 17 metres tall, it's certainly an imposing sight, but many are questioning whether the bright blue sculpture is worthy of its massive price tag. Even the Mayor of Calgary, Naheed Nenshi, has publically called the Giant Blue Ring "awful." The German Inges Idee group behind the sculpture have claimed to be "surprised" by the backlash against their art, which has proved controversial enough to warrant a reassessment of how much money is pumped into Calgary's public art.
