10 Hollywood Stars You Didn't Know Were Real Life Heroes

6. Gerard Butler Saved A Young Boy From Drowning

Well before he was famous for leading the Spartans to victory in Zack Snyder's blockbuster 300 or saving the President from terrorists in Olympus Has Fallen, Gerard Butler carried out an act of heroism in the real world, albeit on a much smaller scale. Back in 1997 Butler was enjoying a picnic with his mother at Teymouth Castle in Kenmore, Scotland, where parts of the film John Brown - which he appeared in alongside Billy Connolly €“ were filmed. A young boy suddenly appeared, screaming that his friend was in trouble, and Butler raced to the riverside where he saw another boy drowning. Quickly diving in, Butler pulled 14-year-old Daniel Smith from the water to safety. Butler said of the incident, ''I wouldn't call myself a hero. I just acted instinctively. When I brought him out he was lifeless. I'm just glad he's all right now." The local policeman on the scene thought otherwise. ''This man had the courage and presence of mind to act quickly. If it had not been for him I doubt the boy would have survived,'' and shortly Butler was awarded a Certificate of Bravery by the Royal Humane Society of Scotland.
