There have been numerous rumours and urban legends over the years, surrounding people poisoning the candy given out to trick-or-treaters. In reality, there has been very few proven cases, and never on a wide scale. One of the cases that has helped propagate the story of the 'mad Halloween poisoner' is that of Ronald Clark O'Bryan, also known as 'The Candy Man.' On the Halloween of 1974, O'Bryan laced some candy with potassium cyanide, distributing it to his eight-year-old son, daughter and three other children. His son Timothy was the only child that ate the poisoned candy, leading to his death only one hour after consumption. It soon emerged that O'Bryan was the poisoner, hoping to gain life insurance money in order to pay off mounting debts.
