10 Incredible Animal War Heroes

3. Nemo

Nemo was a US Air Force sentry dog stationed in Vietnam when his air base was attacked by the Viet Cong on 4 December 1966. The attack was thwarted but some guerillas managed to hide and stay behind.

Nemo and his handler, Robert Throneburg, were patrolling the grounds later that night when he sensed the hidden hostiles. Man and dog attacked, killing two hostiles before getting wounded themselves. Nemo was shot in the snout and lost an eye. Throneburg suffered two bullet wounds to the left shoulder.

Despite his injuries Nemo protected his handler until help arrived. Nemo returned home and lived out his days at the Lackland Air Base.
