Admit it, when you first started playing Dnd, you tried to do that "Gandalf sword and spell" combo, didn't you? Don't be embarrassed, so did everyone else. Right before getting flattened due to an AC of 10 and the lack of any and all martial skill.

This is the one obvious weakness of the Wizard class: their squishiness. They don't have a lot of health, and not a lot of protection for the health they do have. That's why at Hogwarts it's "Wizard chess," not "Wizard boxing." Harry would be KO'd in seconds.

With the martial proficiencies of the Fighter, coupled with a decent Dexterity, you'll be well on your way to becoming a decent Battlemage. Even if your plan is just to roleplay a straight Wizard, having at least one Fighter level gives you access to heaps more armour options, with only the slight drawback of not having that level 20 Wizard. Don't worry, the 20th level ability isn't that good anyway.

Soon you'll be casting Haste with your left hand and slashing goblins with your right, like an insane, arcane Connor McGregor. "Come here and I'll fookin Prestidigitate ya."
