10 Most Disturbing Stories Told On Joe Rogan Experience

2. Megan Phelps-Roper Leaving Westboro Baptist Church

The infamous Westboro Baptist Church, known for rallying outside funerals of military personnel and promoting hate speech against members of the LGBTQ+ community, have their fair share of jaw-dropping anecdotes.

The group’s assemblies and methods of communicating their message (including songs such as ‘Fag Marriage It Can’t Be’ parodying Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’) are so vitriolic and offensive, they have been equally scorned by the ‘outsiders’ they parade against. Being in such a strong ‘us and them environment will undoubtedly create strong bonds between the people within the church.

One member, Megan Phelps-Roper, granddaughter of the pioneer of the church, Fred Phelps, had changed her views on the way the church operated and managed to escape after engaging with ‘outsiders’ on twitter. When discussing her exit to Joe Rogan on episode #974, Phelps-Roper details how immediately after announcing their intension to leave WBC, she and her sister were taken to a hotel by their father.

The following day, they had to ring the doorbell to collect their things as they were no longer welcome in their home. The bonds created in that church supersede any familial one, and WBC’s religion means more to them anything else regardless of any previous connection.
