10 Most Embarrassing Presidential Nicknames In History
6. "His Fraudlency" And "Rutherfraud" - Rutherford B Hayes
A one-term Republican President, Rutherford B Hayes claimed victory in one of the most controversial general elections in US history in 1876. Although he did become the 19th President of the United States, Hayes actually lost the popular vote to Democratic candidate Samuel J Tilden - but he won an intensely disputed electoral college vote, when a commission awarded Hayes 20 electoral votes that were being contested. Many of the opposition party members therefore did not see Hayes as the legitimate President, and so labelled him "Rutherfraud" or "His Fraudulency" during his tenure - and this despite an 1877 agreement which saw the Democrats accept the election result as long as all federal army intervention in Southern politics was ended. A final nickname for Hayes was "Old 8 to 7" - which referred to the fact a commission voted eight to seven to give the electoral college votes to the Republican candidate in 1876.
