10 Most Embarrassing Presidential Nicknames In History

5. "Uncle Jumbo (The Elephant)" - Grover Cleveland

The 22nd and 24th President of the United States, Grover Cleveland was known as "His Obstinacy" because he vetoed more bills than all 21 of his predecessors combined during his tenure. But it is his other commonly-used nickname, "Uncle Jumbo", which is the embarrassing one. The reference to Jumbo the performing circus elephant was aimed at the fact that the President, who served from 1885-1889 and then 1893-1897, was on the extremely large size (pictured above, left) at close to 19-stone (he was just 5ft 11ins) and was a laughable character. A final nickname given to Cleveland was the "Hangman of Buffalo" - and this referred to the fact he was the Sheriff in the town in New York, and that he personally executed two murderers.
