10 Most Important Battles In US History
5. The Battle Of Chapultepec - Mexican-American War
The United States had declared war on Mexico in 1846 after Texas had become a part of the US, going against what Mexico had requested for the United States not to do. This led to tension and prompted Mexicans to commit border raids on Americans in Texas, leading US President James Polk to ask congress for a declaration of war, of which he was given one.
After that, the United States and its army invaded Mexico, leading to the Battle of Chapultepec, one of the final frontiers before the American Army effectively conquered all of the country of Mexico. The battle itself included valiance, courage, and sacrifice.
The United States Army began its assault on the Mexican Military Academy, known as Fort Chapultepec, which guarded Mexico City, on 13 September 1847. Mexican troops fought against the Americans throughout the day and into the night, but the US forces were able to push through the gates and storm the fort, effectively entering Mexico City. With Mexico City’s defenses gone, the city was taken by American forces, leading to Mexico’s defeat in the Mexican-American War.
With the end of the war, the United States kept half of their seized lands from the nation of Mexico, which still angers Mexicans to this day. It proved the United States’ ability to conquer and show its military strength and discipline. The country that was started by a group of militiamen and declared independence from a empire, joined into a war because it was protecting a country that did the same thing.
