6. Cheetah/Wildcat/BigDog

I'll level with you, the main reason these robots are on the list is because they make me laugh my a** off.

They're also hugely advanced and an incredible feat of engineering but, you know, also hilarious.

Whilst most legged robots bumble around on two legs at the moment, the Cheetah can hit speeds of nearly 30 mph, breaking the land speed record for legged robots, as well as leaping clean over high objects (and sticking the landing).

The BigDog model of quadrupedal robots has an incredible sense of balance and can keep itself upright on the trickiest terrain (albeit, by stumbling around like a drunk uncle at a wedding).

Silly as they look (and, boy, do they look silly), these are the kinds of robots that could well come charging at you on a battlefield. Their amazing balance, speed and durability make them ideal for the military, so laugh at them at your peril.
