6. Are There Differences In How The Police Treat White People Vs Black People?

YouTuber SoFlo Antonio of SoFlo Comedy made this video which shows the different reactions of the police to a white man carrying an assault rifle in public compared to a black man doing the same. As the video shows, whilst the police confront both individuals for carrying their weapons, the way in which they do this is drastically difference. When the policeman comes across the white individual carrying an assault rifle, he stops his car and casually strolls over to the individual to have a fairly pleasant chat with him as to why he is carrying his rifle about a public street. Things don€™t go quite so well for the black individual however, who as soon as he is spotted by the cops finds himself at gunpoint, being yelled at to lie on the ground despite having given no more indication of being a threat in comparison to the white individual earlier in the video. What the experiment does well €“ This experiment highlights an issue which is in the spotlight in America at the moment concerning the apparent differences in approaches the police have for dealing with people of different races. There is clearly a feeling among many Americans that the police are much more heavy-handed in their dealings with members of the black community and this video serves as an example of such police discrimination. Possible Flaws €“ The video with the white person being spoken to by the police officer cuts out quite quickly, not allowing us to see the full altercation and thus see how it ended. However perhaps this was done intentionally because the only issue the video wanted to highlight was the initial response of the officers, in which case the footage presented was probably enough.
