5. Does Gender Influence How Likely People Are To Try And Stop Domestic Abuse In Public?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtVHnZX8E50 Back to YouTube's OckTV now, who this time turn their attention to domestic abuse, examining whether the public are more likely to interfere when a male is abusive towards a female, than when a female abuses a male. Thankfully in the earlier parts of the video we see that when the female is the victim of the abuse members of the public are quick to intervene to protect here. However, worryingly when the roles are reversed, not one person comes to the aid of the male victim. Sickeningly there are members of the public who taunt this victim and in one instance another man even tries to join in the abuse. What the experiment does well The video highlights the issue that male domestic abuse victims arent taken as seriously by the public as female victims, stressing the importance of raising public awareness that female-on-male domestic abuse situations can also be a very damaging experience. This in turn also helps to highlight why males are less likely to report being domestically abused be a female. Possible Flaws In the instances we saw the male-on-female abuse the male in the video came across as a jealous boyfriend, whereas in the female-on-male abuse situations the girl was screaming at the guy for things such as cheating on her. Neither instance justifies the violence displayed in the video of course, however the girls words help to vilify her boyfriend, making him seem less of a victim. It is possible that this might have had some influence on why nobody helped the male victim.
