FOX

Perhaps the most infamous of all unsolved crimes, the story of Jack the Ripper is known universally and has inspired countless plays, books and films. The Ripper mainly targeted women who worked as prostitutes in the Whitechapel area of London during a period that spanned from April 1888 to February 1891.

A total of eleven murders were reported to the Police during this time with at least five of these being confirmed as the work of Jack The Ripper. The Ripper€™s confirmed victims all had similar wounds having had their throats slit and the lower area of their abdomen ripped open. All of these woman were murdered close to or on a weekend and all happened under the cover of night. The mutilations to the victims became increasingly terrible with each death with some of the later victims even having organs removed and taken from the crime scene.

There have been many theories and suspects as to who the Ripper was ranging from a doctor who specialised in back street abortions to ludicrous allegations against the author of Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll. Despite a thorough investigation at the time and continued interest in the case, it is probable that the true identity of Jack The Ripper will remain known only among his victims.
