10 Richest People Who Ever Lived

8. Alan Rufus - £112bn ($168bn)

Alan Rufus, 1st Lord of Richmond, was a distant relative of William I (The Conqueror) and he was one of the Norman King's most-trusted lieutenants during the invasion of Britain in 1066. Rufus was able to boast 250,000 acres of land stretching from Yorkshire all the way down to London - including Richmond Castle - and received huge wealth from the area he owned. Interestingly, Rufus founded the town of Richmond next to the castle - and was even given the title "the Honour of Richmond" by William I.
