10 Skills To Help You Survive The Apocalypse

5. The Essentials

Right, so if you can stockpile a load of military-grade survival kit then great, but it's a safe bet to say that most people will have to get by with whatever is in their house when the asteroid/bomb/zombies hit.

If you can safely stay where you are then grand, but if you have to head out then ensure that, at the very least, you have the same equipment on you that you might take on a trek or camping trip. Bare essentials are a rucksack, sturdy shoes, a lighter, a tarp, non-perishable food (jerky, cereal bars and ramen are ideal), some rope and a knife.

Rather than lug a load of water around with you, you're better off carrying something that can purify it when you find it. Specialised equipment such as filters and iodine are great but unlikely to just be lying around your 3-bed, semi-detached. You can improvise filters using fabric and water bottles, and can purify by either boiling your water or (in a pinch) adding a small amount of household bleach.

Other essentials include a map (because your phone is going to die within a couple of hours), a shovel (preferably foldable), a small cooking pot, a wind up torch, a sleeping bag, and some soap/disinfectant (seriously, there's no point surviving the zombies if you end up dying of an infected ingrowing toenail).

Oh and a bike. Why does no one ever get on their bike in zombie movies?
