4. Bonus Items

As well as the obvious essentials, there may be a few items lying around your house that have clever uses in an apocalypse situation.

If you're heading out into the wilderness, be sure to pack a load of condoms, because you never know, right?

Kidding, but aside from their primary function, condoms are incredible in survival situations. They're sterile, take up very little room and are waterproof. You can use them to carry water (they will hold around half a litre), to waterproof items such as matches or even as a makeshift barrier to prevent infection when touching something dodgy (like a dismembered zombie limb).

Dental floss is pretty strong relative to its thickness. You could use it to bind items together or even make traps and snares to catch yourself some din-dins. It is also an indispensable part of an improvised first aid kit as it is relatively sterile.

Tampons make great wound dressings, either stuffed into a wound such as a bullet hole as they are, or unravelled to create a large dressing. The non-applicator variety come in a plastic wrapping that will keep them clean and dry until you need to use them. They can also be stuffed into the neck of a bottle as a water filter.

If you wear glasses then these could be used in starting fires. Unless, of course, the sun has been blocked out by an meteor impact.
