Everyone knows about William Shakespeare. No English course would be complete without this great man. And whilst many find Shakespearian language tedious, his tales of tragedy, romance, and power are the foundations of modern storytelling.

Plays like Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream are rooted in western culture. Modern versions of these plays – and many others – crop up year after year, and audiences still flock to see them because the stories are timeless.

But the narratives of Shakespeare’s stories are only part of his genius. He also had a remarkable command of the English language. He even invented 1,700 words himself, many of which are still used today, such as ‘bandit’, ‘critic’, ‘dwindle’, and ‘lacklustre’.

When it comes to storytelling, Shakespeare was the complete package. His pen captured the essence of humanity, explored universal themes, and added a substantial number of words to the English language.
