The economics of the movie industry changed when Hollywood realized that there were profits to be made in the home video market, which was gaining in popularity among consumers. This came as something of a surprise because the studios originally resisted the new medium, perceiving it as an unwelcome competitor. As a result, when videocassette players became widely available in the 1970s, independent film companies were the only ones offering their titles on video. With no competition from Hollywood, and the novelty of watching explicit material in the home on their side, distributors of adult pictures cleaned up. By 1979, three-quarters of all tapes sold in the US were hard-core films.
