The hatred, if not fear of ginger people is something which has forever puzzled me. Whilst I understand that at some point in the past someone decided that it should be a ginger kid with freckles, glasses and an overall uncool dress sense that should be the perennial victim of every high school bully to ever exist in the world of fiction, it raises the question of whether the stereotype came before the reality or not. Thanks to an increase in gingerism in the media from the likes of South Park, it has become wholly acceptable for people to be able to express just how creepy they find ginger people. It would now appear to be totally fine for people to continually use ginger people as the butt of the throwaway joke, and almost nothing is said of it, or if someone does speak up, such as the classic GINGERS DO HAVE SOULS kid, they are mocked openly in public. Now I get it, we're supposed to have a sense of humour about ourselves, and throwing a temper tantrum that would put Kanye West to shame is only going to exacerbate the problem, but since when did it become okay for everyone else to just join in the humiliation? My theory is this: because we've finally reached an age where it appears that the majority of the population who own a working brain have realised that racism is no longer in any way acceptable, we have found a new, slightly sneakier target. Ginger people can come from anywhere, can be of any culture or background, therefore to pick on a ginger for how they look is deemed to be not racist, because they're culture could be exactly the same as ours. Therefore we're getting away with it freely. Good work, sly society.
