10 UK Place Names Americans Can't Pronounce Correctly

4. Slough

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrh8Y4g0pCs&feature=youtu.be Here's a trick place name! The word Slough has three pronunciations and the correct one to use depends on the context! "Sluff" is used when a snake sheds its skin and "slew" when slogging through mud. But for the actual place, the word is said as "sl-ow", with the "ow" said as if an exclamation of pain. No insult intended to the town. Our volunteer got this one right but she thought most Americans would either say "slow" (as in "not fast") or go for one of the other ways of saying the word, since they're more common in American English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl4bMQlQhAk
