11 Breathtakingly Beautiful Places That Will Kill You Horribly

4. Lake Karachay - Russia

According to a report by the Worldwatch Institute, Lake Karachay is the most polluted spot on Earth.

This seemingly idyllic lake is thought to have a bed composed entirely of high-level radioactive waste approximately 11 feet deep (that's the waste, not the water).

The lake has around 4.44 exabecquerels (EBq) over less than one square mile of lake. For a bit of context, the Chernobyl disaster released between 5-10 EBq over thousands and thousands of square miles and still has radioactive moose wandering around over 30 years on.

According to the same report, the radiation levels at Lake Karachay are enough to kill an adult human within an hour - and that hour is not going to be pleasant.

Cause of death: Radiation poisoning.
