12 Insane Real-Life Prison Breaks You Won't Believe

4. Vassilis Paleokostas - Helicopter(s)

Vassilis Paleokostas is a divisive figure, being known as a Greek Robin Hood. His mantra would be to kidnap high-profile targets, corrupt businessmen and rich politicians then demand a huge ransom for their safe return. The intriguing part of the story is that Paleokostas only keeps a small percentage of the fee for himself, while the rest of the money would be distributed among the struggling farmers from his poverty-stricken region, a move which would benefit entire communities. Even when his 'hostages' were released they claimed he was very polite and respectful towards them, and is yet to harm anybody. In 1995, the law caught up to him, and he was jailed. Soon after, a helicopter approached the prison and the guards reportedly thought it was inspectors or other high-ranking prison bosses coming to visit, after all, nobody else would be stupid enough to land a helicopter inside a prison during broad daylight... It was Paleokostas' accomplices, and he simply hopped in before taking off, and that's when the guards started firing, but it was too late. He evaded detection for over two years, and even went back to his usual routine before finally being captured. In February 2009 he was due to stand trial on the 23rd, but had just been moved back to his original prison on the 21st, so his buddies fuelled up the helicopter and dropped in on the 22nd to sweep him up again, withthe rest of the prisoners below cheering and celebrating his daring stunt. He is yet to be found.
