Like the capricious children that we are, the moment virtual reality begins to become a thing with the latest developments in Oculus Rift, we've decided that what we really want is full blown, interactive holodecks.

A holodeck is a virtual reality room in which objects and environments are simulated by "a combination of transported matter, replicated matter, tractor beams, and shaped force fields onto which holographic images are projected." (thanks, Wikipedia) and allows you to fully interact with it without having to look like a total berk in bulky goggles.

The commercial applications for this invention are many and varied far beyond the world of immersive computer games (although that would be beyond wondrous). 

You would be able to take a holiday on a tropical beach or even an alien planet without having to leave your home town or you could even socialise remotely at a simulated dinner party for you and your long-distance chums. 

With a holodeck, the only limit in your imagination (and programming abilities).
