12 Problems Only John Green Fans Will Understand

12. Having An Endless Desire To Go On Road Trips

Road trips are a bit of a staple in John Green's books, and distant travelling in general. In Paper Towns, Quentin and his friends journey in an effort to reach the missing Margo. In an Abundance of Katherines, Colin Singleton and one of his friends take a trip in order to forget a breakup, and in The Fault In Our Stars €“ though not technically a road trip €“ Hazel and Gus travel to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten.

What these trips might represent is up for interpretation (as Green himself would say, books belong to their readers) €“ it's likely, however, that they're a conduit for change: emotional change, physical change, a change in one's relationship with one's self. Regardless of literary function, the journeys in Green's novels are wildly entertaining, honing in on the desire to cut ties from home and head on out to explore.
