I have read this book several times, the first time as a young girl, and it never fails to send shivers down my spine. The scenario is so grim, it will put you off BDSM activity for a good while if you are that way inclined! Jessie and Gerald, a married couple, are at their cabin in remote Maine. Gerald handcuffs Jessie to the bed for some sex play, she decides she doesn't want this and kicks him. He falls to the floor, cracks his head and has a heart attack, leaving Jessie tied up. A stray dog appears and starts eating Gerald's corpse. Jesse, fuelled by thirst and hunger, begins to have vivid memories and hallucinations about the past. She comes to several painful realisations about her background. Her visions are interspersed with attempts to break free from her manacles. Will Jessie manage to escape? And if so, will she retain her sanity? The premise of the book - being handcuffed to a bed with only a corpse and a hungry dog for company - is a very scary basis. It makes the reader's mind go into overdrive - what would I do in the same position? All sorts of scenarios go through the reader's head - slowly dying of thirst, the dog turning its attentions towards you. It is too horrible to contemplate. King resolves Jessie's predicament in a gruesome yet realistic manner. Not before he puts her through intense mental torture that would give any sane person the heebie jeebies. A taut, tense and terrifying read.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
