12 Scientific Explanations For The Weird Things Cats Do
4. Why Do They Love Boxes So Much?
There's no greater gift to a cat than a good old cardboard box. You can buy the most expensive kitty climbing frame on the market, and they'll probably sit in the box it came in.
They're not just being obnoxious, they're just following their instincts. Cats love to hide and it is in their nature to seek out enclosed spaces. Whether they're hiding from predators or prey, cats can't get enough of the safety and security afforded by a little cardboard box.
The little hidey-hole serves as a sort of den or nest that they would be likely to construct in the wild. If you've ever made a blanket nest on a hangover Sunday then you'll understand the comfort and joy of being cradled in such a way.
Whilst in a box, cats know that they cannot be jumped from behind or otherwise snuck up on, ensuring that anything that wishes to approach them has to come head on, and they will use their position to their advantage in ambushing prey. This is why they will often dart out quickly if something interesting passes their box and then swiftly retreat back into it.
