4. He Posed With A Copy Of The Sun Newspaper... Going Back On His Claims To Have "Stood Up" to Rupert Murdoch And Alienating The Population Of Merseyside In The Process
The Sun newspaper may be crucial to winning over a large section of the electorate, but Ed Miliband's decision to pose for a picture with the tabloid in June 2014 was extremely naive - and was potentially fatal to his 2015 General Election chances. Ever since The Sun's controversial, inflammatory and quite-frankly disgusting coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives, the paper has been extremely unpopular on Merseyside - and anyone seen showing support for it immediately loses favour in this area of the North West. The Labour mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, accused Miliband of "insulting" the city by holding up a special edition of the paper marking the start of the 2014 Brazil World Cup - and the Leader of the Opposition was forced to issue a public apology. What made Miliband's gaffe with The Sun even more damaging, however, was the fact he claimed he'd "stood up" to Rupert Murdoch, who owns the publication, earlier in the year during his conference speech. Miliband managed to alienate the people of Liverpool and go back on his own claims that he wouldn't be influenced in any way by Murdoch. A double blow that could extinguish any hopes Miliband has of becoming PM.
