Despite all the history and despite all the legacy, sometimes it's hard to believe that World War I began a mere 100 years ago. It was in World War 1 that the first bombing of London by a zeppelin airship began, and the city was severely affected by both these attacks, and the strain of turning London general hospitals into clinics solely for injured soldiers returning from France. There are a number of exhibitions, installations and events that are happening around London to commemorate the start of the war. Libraries across London are holding assorted commemorative events, and there is a wealth of art both from and representing the era in museums and galleries across London. The main event though will be held in the Tower of London. 888,246 ceramic poppies, one for each British and Colonial death during the war, will be unveiled to mark the centenary on 5th August. This will then be the backdrop to education and performances, with the scale of the project being used to reflect the momentousness of this occasion.
