Chances are, if you're from the UK and under 35 you've got a friend (or several) in London. England's capital has a population of around 8 million, so that's not a huge surprise, but recent research appears to suggest that more and more young people from around the UK make a mass exodus to London once they've completed their education. Recovery from the economic crisis has been geographically skewed in favour of London and the South-East in a big way. The UK Business secretary Vince Cable put it ever so eloquently:
" becoming a giant suction machine, draining the life out of the rest of the country".
Whether or not this is a technical term is unclear. Politics and financial disaster aside, there are limited options for the youth of today. According to The Independent, one in three 22-30 year old graduates move to London. Peer pressure is a powerful thing: All your friends are doing it, why not you?
