9. Tooth Lacquering

Reign: 1860's - 1910's (Japan) Known as Ohaguro or fushimizu, teeth lacquering was the art of dying one's teeth jet-black using a dark-brown solution of ferric acetate. Why did they do it? Because it was considered beautiful, of course. Married women were generally the ones who dyed their teeth, stating that it was also beneficial for tooth decay. Some men and even unmarried women did it, but it wasn't a common practice among them. It was widely believed that the practice was done to married women to prevent them having affairs, but that theory was slammed by Japanese social scientist Kyouji Watanabe, who said that it was merely a sign of maturity among Japanese women.
