On March 3, 1934, legendary outlaw John Dillinger escaped from the supposedly escape-proof Crown Point jail in Indiana, which was heavily guarded. According to newspaper reports at the time, Dillinger had escaped using a fake gun made from wood blackened with shoe polish.
