19. A French Marshal Knew That The Versailles Treaty Was "Not Peace"... And Predicted War Would Return In 20 Years (1919)

Marshal Ferdinand Foch - who served as a French soldier and as the Allied Generalissime during the First World War - believed Germany needed to be greatly weakened and devoid of any military strength at the Paris Peace Conference. He argued The Great War had proven Germany needed to be prevented from rising as a force once again - and stated once the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919:
"This is not peace. It is an armistice for 20 years."
When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, World War II began - 20 years after Foch said those infamous words.
