Until 1968, Clinton was actually a passionate Republican - and even campaigned for the party on many occasions. In 1964, Clinton worked on Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater's campaign - in which he ultimately lost to incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B Johnson - and she was even president of the Wellesley Young Republicans while at university. However, Clinton stepped down as president of the Wellesley Young Republicans and switched allegiance to the Democratic Party after changing her views on the American Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War - and the fact she believed Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign against Nelson Rockefeller contained "veiled racism".
