Despite the fact that a surprisingly large number of Newcastle fans will pretend to be part of the Heed Army when it suits them, there's a lot of snobbery on the wrong side of the river. To some, Gateshead residents are no more than mackems, or at best wannabe Geordies. There's a word for people who think that. It's too vulgar to be repeated here. The annoying thing about being from Gateshead is that people will think you don't quite belong to either Newcastle or Durham, as if that's all anyone should aspire to. Gateshead is Gateshead, proud on its own terms, but then unless you live here... you wouldn't understand.
